The Shosoin repository houses the oldest surviving Japanese paper, a Mino washi used for family registers, dating back to 702 AD.

This region has a history of being a lake 5 million years ago, which is why high-quality soil could be obtained. As a result, it has flourished as a pottery-producing region for a long time.
